Library and Archives

Researchers can consult the library and archive collection in the research centre. They will find important sources of information on the history of French and non-French orders and decorations as well as on the people who wore them.

Library

The more than 3,000 works and wide selection of articles in the library are divided into the following categories:
French orders and decorations; orders and decorations from around the world; related auxiliary and complementary fields like heraldry, the sciences of emblems, flags and uniforms;
General history and specific themes including social history, political history and military history;
art history; annuals and almanacs; collective and individual biographies.

Archives

The Grand Chancery’s own archives are enriched with donations and museum acquisitions.
They are divided into four sections: French orders and decorations prior to The Consulate (1799); weapons of honour and the Legion of Honour (with the genuine nomination decrees from 1803 to 1934); 19th and 20th century contemporary French orders and decorations; orders from around the world.
